This blog was made with the intension of going back through your memory to the games you used to play as a child. While we are looking back, for some just a few years but for others it may be many years, at the fun activities you used to play with friends I will discuss the origin and purpose of the game. I will also mention how the same game may be played in other parts of the world.

Hula Hoops
I'm pretty sure that every child in the U.S has either seen or played with a hula hoop as a child or even in their life time for that matter. The circular hoop is made out of plastic today but in the 500 bce willow, rattan, grapevines or stiff grasses. You place it round your body and move your hips in a circular motion to have the hula hoop move in a circle counter clock wise without holding the hula hoop. in Egypt the children would play with them, made of grape vines, by rolling them around, swinging them around with sticks.
In the 17th century Great Britain hula hoops were used for religious ceremonies and in some cases there are medical documents that state that people have dislocated their backs or even had a heart attack because of it.... note to self: take it easy on the hula hooping.... the name of it came from sailors who had seen hula dancers moving with the same motion that the Egyptian children would do when they played with them. But instead of moving it with sticks they would move it with their hips.
around the 14oo's the native Americans found dancing as a way for telling stories and they wuld dance with hoops resembling eagles, snakes, ect. Their dances used very fast movements and the off-body use of hoops to construct symbolic forms around their bodies...... so interpretive dancing?....maybe.... After many years of this traditional dancing they adopted an annual Native American Hoop Dancing competition at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona
The hula hoop Phenomena of the 50’s can be traced to Australia, where children twirled hoops made out of bamboo. When the production of bamboo hoops could not meet the demand, Toltoys , a popular toy company such as Fisher Price, began to make hoops out of plastic and sold 400,000 hoops in 1957....... The Evolution Of Hula Hoops..... Where can you find this in a history text book?... The small colorful plastic tube made primarily for children to play adapted to be a way of exercise..
Hula hoops were a great part in m childhood but they remind me of a beautiful thing Known as Karma. Karma is associated with "what goes around come around" or " you get out what you put into it" do these sound familiar? When getting a hula hoop to move you must move your hips in a circular motion. In kindergarten we learned that a circle has no corners or edges, it is never ending like the circle of life. I'm not making this into a " you are born, you pay taxes and then you die" kind of ordeal I'm looking at it as " with every action comes a equal or opposite reaction". In life you make mistakes its a learning experience, so for an example if you are rude to someone else they will most likely be rude back and if nothing changes there is a never ending circle of rudeness.

Hopscotch
Hopscotch we learned how to play back in grade school. First you had to draw your board, typically with chalk that our teacher gave us, Secondly you needed the perfect sized rock, not too big but not too small. Next you were to toss the rock into the first part of your board and hop in! you needed to stay on one leg, bend down and get the rock and toss it again and so on. the first time I played hopscotch was in kindergarten, like I was I hopped right in on one leg, fell over and scraped my knee.... I needed a lot of practice! But where did this game really come from? As a kindergartener no one ever wondered about these questions where did it come from? Who Started it? etc..
Hopscotch was originally played by the roman children but it wasn't documented with rules until the 17th century in the English language. It was called "Scotch-Hop" or "Scotch-Hoppers". When Breaking down the word to the etiology "Scotch" and "Hop" both mean to jump in several different languages.
The Board Varies greatly Through centuries in the U.S., England, Australia, and Brazil. Some are drawn and some are made of stone in a walk way/court yard.
Looking back now at hopscotch when I was 5 years old was just a game I got to play with friends but now as a college freshman it reminds me of the game we call "life". When starting something new you must jump right in! Whether you fall in the beginning middle or end, even with scrapes and bruises, you must get up, dust yourself off and start again.

Hopscotch & Hula Hoops is a blog that will cover games we played as children and some of the most memorable games for children is playing with hula hoop and drawing the hopscotch board with chalk in the court yard. But before I start to over load you with origins, purposes and images let me tell you a little about myself. My name is Sara, I am currently a college freshman, some of my best memories as a child was being able to play different games at recess or at home with my cousins. I chose my topic not because it was easy but because it hits home, I want to not only to be able to relate to you but to give you some insight where the different activities came from.
During the course of time that I will be writing my blog I will discuss the topics as followed:
- Hopscotch
- Hula Hoops
- Sharks and Minnows
- Red Rover
Feed Back on topics is not Disouraged, rather incouraged to help me with topics, what you want to know more of, what you want to know less of ect. Feel free to comment or share!
